Swimming Pool Chemical - SDIC

Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate (SDIC) is an inorganic compound. It is a colourless, water-soluble solid, widely applied for the sterilization of swimming pools and drinking water, fighting against infectious diseases. It can also act as disinfectant in treating livestock, poultry and fish. SDIC has Other applications in wool shrinkage, textile bleaching, and industrial circulating water cleaning.

SDIC is normally supplied in powder, granulars, and tablets forms. SDIC tablets are used widely to chlorinate swimming pool water.

When Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate is added to water, it is rapidly hydrolysed to release free available chlorine. As free available chlorine is consumed by reaction with organic material in the water, chloroisocyanurates will rapidly dissociate and continue to release free chlorine.

More about SDIC

What is SDIC?

SDIC stands for Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate. It is a stabilized chlorine chemical compound. It is used as a disinfectant in water most commonly found in the swimming pool application. It is widely used as a stable source of chlorine for the disinfection of swimming pools.

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate is harmless to humans. As a disfectant, Sodium dichloroisocyanurate can be used in hygiene and disease control, medical treatment, livestock farming, aquiculture and plant protection, etc. For example, it can be used to disinfect drinking water, industrial water, dishware, swimming pools, livestock, poultry and fish. It can be used for environment disinfection as well as regular and preventative contagion prevention. SDIC can also be used in shrink resistance, weaving and bleaching of wool, algae removal from industrial water, and chlorination of rubber.

What are the differences between TCCA, SDIC, and Calcium Hypochlorite?

TCCA(Trichloroisocyanuric acid), SDIC(Sodium dichloroisocyanurate), and Calcium Hypochlorite are the three most popular chlorine used for water disinfection. Below are their differences.

  1. Raw material. The raw material to produce TCCA is cyanuric acid, sodium hydroxide( NaOH), and chlorine. The raw material used to produce SDIC is the same as TCCA. The raw material for Calcium Hypochlorite is calcium hydroxide( Ca(OH) 2), Sodium hydroxide(NaOH), and chlorine (Cl2).
  2. Organic or Inorganic. TCCA belongs to Organic chemicals; SDIC and Calcium Hypochlorite are Inorganic chemicals.
  3. Effective chlorine. TCCA: 90%; SDIC: 56% or 60%; Calcium Hypochlorite: 65% or 70%
  4. Stability. TCCA: stabilized; SDIC: Stabilized; Cal Hypo: Unstabilized. When the UV rays of the sunlight hit the water, chlorine starts to evaporate. It is stated that UV rays can reduce chlorine by up to 90% in 2 hours. So a stabilizer called cyanuric acid is needed especially for outdoor pools. TCCA and SDIC have stabilized chlorine with cyanuric acid added in. On the contrary, calcium hypochlorite is unstabilized chlorine. Cyanuric acid can be added separately.
  5. PH value in 1% solution. TCCA: 2.7-3.3, It is acidic, which will affect the PH level. SDIC: 5.5-7.0, less effect on PH level compared to TCCA. Calcium Hypochlorite: 10.8, which makes it easier to maintain proper pool water PH level 7.2-7.6.
  6. Transportation. TCCA and SDIC belong to 5.1 class of dangerous goods. They can be mixed loading with other products. Cal Hypo also belongs to the 5.1 class of dangerous goods. But it can’t be mixed loading with any other products.
