Swimming Pool Chemical - Cyanuric Acid
Cyanuric acid is a stabilizer for the chlorine in swimming pools exposed to sunlight. It helps reduce chlorine loss by protecting the free chlorine in the pool from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, reducing the amount of chlorine needed to maintain proper sanitizer levels. Because of this, cyanuric acid can help reduce the cost of maintaining a safe and clean swimming pool.
The Sun’s ultraviolet rays degrade chlorine very quickly, creating a problem for outdoor pools. Studies show that sunlight can wipe out chlorine by 75-90% in two hours. The half-life of chlorine—when exposed to direct sunlight—is about 45 minutes. That means half your chlorine is gone in 45 minutes. After another 45 minutes, another half of your chlorine is gone. Without a stabilizer, your pool won’t have enough chlorine levels, creating a breeding ground for nasty bacteria and algae.

More about Cyanuric Acid
What is Cyanuric Acid?
Cyanuric acid is a chlorine stabilizer for swimming pools. It is usually referred to as “stabilizer”. It should not be confused with muriatic acid which is often used to adjust the pH. Cyanuric acid combines with free chlorine in pool water, protecting it from the sun’s ultraviolet rays and reducing chlorine loss. Properly managed, cyanuric acid can reduce the amount of chlorine needed to maintain the minimum chlorine residual in an outdoor pool.
Cyanuric acid is intended to reduce the loss of free chlorine cause by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Indoor pools are not exposed to direct sunlight and do not benefit from adding cyanuric acid or using products containing cyanuric acid.
How To Add Cyanuric To Your Swimming Pool?
There are a couple of ways that you can add this chlorine stabilizer to your pool water! One way is to have the pool chlorine stabilizer suspended in perforated plastic container and add it to the pool. Another way is to dump it into a surge or atmospheric tank. This allows for the dissolution of the chemical without you having to close your pool facility.
Cyanuric acid can also be added directly to the swimming pool but doing this may delay the opening of your pool. If you manage or run a big commercial pool at a resort or water park, you do not want to have delays. If you put Cyanuric acid (CyA) directly in your pool, opening delays are caused by the sight of the pool chemical at the bottom of your swimming pool. It can take as long as 48 hours for it to be completely dissolved into full solution. For this reason, using a surge or atmospheric tank is the best option to use.
