Swimming Pool Chemical - Polyaluminum Chloride (PAC)
Polyaluminum chloride is an inorganic polymer coagulant, also known as PAC. PAC is a highly efficient and effective coagulant, capable of removing suspended solids, turbidity, and other contaminants from water. It is a versatile and cost-effective solution for water treatment and purification.
It is a large molecular weight, high charge inorganic polymer water treatment agent produced by the bridging effect of hydroxide ions and the polymerization of multivalent anions. Compared with traditional inorganic flocculants such as ferrous sulfate and aluminum sulfate, polyaluminum chloride has advantages such as good stability, wide adaptability to water bodies, fast hydrolysis rate, strong adsorption capacity, large floc formation, dense and fast precipitation, low effluent turbidity, and good dewatering performance.
Polyaluminum chloride is usually present in solid powder or liquid form. Solid PAC must be dissolved before use.
Classified by form: solid polyaluminum chloride and liquid polyaluminum chloride.
Classification by content: 22%, 24%, 26%, 28%, 30%
Classified by production process: drum drying polyaluminum chloride and spray drying polyaluminum chloride.

More about PAC
The differences between PACs of different colors
Polyaluminum chloride has white, yellow, and brown colors, and there are significant differences in application and production technology between different colors. Polyaluminum chloride with an aluminum oxide content between 27% and 30% within the national standard range is mostly solid powder in earthy yellow, yellow, or light yellow color. These types of polyaluminum chloride have good water solubility and form large and active flocs quickly during the dissolving process, accompanied by electrochemical, coagulation, adsorption, and precipitation changes. They have excellent purification effects on highly turbid water.
1. White polyaluminum chloride
White polyaluminum chloride is known as high-purity iron-free white polyaluminum chloride. Compared with other polyaluminum chlorides, it is the highest quality product. Its main raw materials are high-quality aluminum hydroxide powder and hydrochloric acid, and the production process uses the most advanced spray drying technology in China. White polyaluminum chloride is used in papermaking sizing agents, sugar decolorizing and clarifying agents, tanning, medicine, cosmetics, precision casting, and water treatment.
2. Yellow polyaluminum chloride
Yellow polyaluminum chloride is made from calcium aluminate powder, hydrochloric acid, and aluminum sulfate. It is mainly used in sewage treatment and drinking water treatment. The raw materials used for drinking water treatment are aluminum hydroxide powder, hydrochloric acid, and a small amount of calcium aluminate powder. The production process uses plate-and-frame filtration or spray drying technology. National standards have strict requirements for heavy metals in drinking water treatment, so both raw materials and production processes are better than those of brown polyaluminum chloride. Yellow polyaluminum chloride is generally produced by drum drying or spray tower drying and comes in two solid forms: flake and powder.
3. Brown polyaluminum chloride
Brown polyaluminum chloride is made from calcium aluminate powder, hydrochloric acid, aluminum sulfate, and iron powder. The production process uses drum drying method and is generally used for sewage treatment. The addition of iron powder gives it a brown color. The more iron powder added, the darker the color becomes. When the amount of iron powder exceeds a certain amount, it is also called iron polyaluminum chloride, which has excellent effects on sewage treatment.
What is the use of Poly aluminium chloride?
Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) is most commonly used in the water treatment industry as a coagulant. It is characterised by the degree of basification – the higher this number the higher the polymer content which equals a more efficient product in the clarification of water products.
How does Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC) work for water treatment?
Poly Aluminium Chloride is a highly efficient water treatment chemical where it works as a coagulant to extract and clump together contaminants, colloidal and suspended matter. This results in the formation of floc (flocculation) for removal via filters.
